Scott Jr., whose smooth, distinctive vocals helped define the sound of the legendary R&B group The Whispers, died on June 26 in Northridge, California, following a six-month battle with cancer. He was 81. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family.\n\nBorn in Fort Worth, Texas in 1944, Walter and his family moved to Los Angeles, where he and his identical twin brother, Wallace Scott, formed The Whispers in 1963 alongside Nicholas Caldwell, Marcus Hutson, and Gordy Harmon. Known for their lush harmonies and polished choreography, the group became one of the most beloved acts in R&B, with a career spanning over five decades.\n\nAfter a brief hiatus to serve in the Vietnam War, Walter rejoined the group in 1969. The Whispers found major success after signing to Solar Records in 1978, releasing a string of hits including “And the Beat Goes On,” “Lady,” “It’s a Love Thing,” and “Rock Steady,” their highest-charting pop single, which reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. In total, the group earned 15 top 10 R&B singles and eight top 10 R&B albums, including two that reached No. 1.\n\nWalter’s warm baritone, paired with Wallace’s tenor, gave The Whispers their unmistakable vocal chemistry. Beyond their recordings, the group was celebrated for its elegant stage presence and enduring live performances, remaining a touring force well into the 2000s.\n\nThe Whispers were inducted into the National Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame in 2014.
