"text": "Happy Thursday and welcome to The Afternoon Show with the gracious Larry Mizell, Jr. and wonderful producers Sharlese and Franny! Today is Music Heals: Beyond Cancer, a day when we acknowledge and honor the suffering of those who’ve been affected by cancer, join in community together, and affirm the power of music to make a difference in our lives. Thank you so much for being here!\n---\nRequested by Caroline in Seattle: I’d like to request a song for my stepmom, Dana, who passed away earlier this April after a brutal and abrupt battle with stage 4 uterine cancer. She was diagnosed far too late in December with a tumor so large that she was already 10cm dilated—which speaks to the incredible amount of force and strength she had, and shows just how much pain women can endure in this world, for better or worse.\nIt was always a running joke between my dad, Dana, and others that she was my father’s guardian angel—saving him from years of emotional turmoil after he and my mom split up. But now, looking back, I think perhaps she was actually my guardian angel. She became the support system I never had, someone I could rely on and trust. With her by my dad’s side, I finally felt a deep sense of freedom, knowing he was safe, cared for, and truly loved.\nI’ll never forget how she welcomed me into her basement with my best friend after college, or the concerts we went to together with my dad—especially The Rolling Stones, where we danced all night. If you could please play Wild Horses in honor of her, and for my dad who has yet to truly grieve, we would be so grateful."

"text": "From Brenda (for friends lost):\n\nI’ve been listening closely to your recent theme on lives lost to cancer, and I wanted to share a thread of love that’s been woven through mine. I am going to see my childhood best friend Roberta for the last time💔\n\nMy dear friend Roberta, who is now unresponsive, once told me I was her first best friend. It was the kindest thing I’ve heard in years—and it reminded me how deeply we can matter to someone, even when words feel simple.\n\nIn 1994, my high school mentor passed from cancer. She was one of the few people who made me feel safe and seen during a time I didn’t know how to ask for it.\n\nAnd in December 2024, the longest-standing friend of my adult life also passed from cancer.\n\nThese women gave me meaning. They gave me sanctuary. And while I don’t want this message to be about me, I do wonder what it says—that love like theirs keeps echoing, even as they go quiet.\n\nMaybe it’s a reminder that being someone’s safe place is the most lasting legacy we can offer.\n\nThank you for holding space for these stories.\n\nThe last song I shared was with Roberta, a song that was popular when we were growing up by Toto, I'll be Over You.\n\nI Shared a lot of songs with my mentor Marylin, that kept us connected but she loved More Than Words by Extreme.\n\nFor Shelly I shared this song with her often and we saw the live show together, Say Hey (I love you) by Michael Franti & Spearhead."

While the world melted down around her, she broke out the flour and chocolate and baked her heart out. You name it, every permutation of chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon rolls, sourdough, old school biscuits, new school flaky treats, cakes, pies, high brow experiments, low brow hits (with coconut), obscure delights from far away, and the most famous classics from our own family's traditions. \n\nKEXP was playing in the background for all of this. \n\nShe baked for fun, for joy, for exploration, for her own mental health, for friends and family, to navigate COVID and the social and political unrest, and to cope during a time we weren't sure she would make it through. \n\nShe did. She kicked cancers ass, and did it with style, grit, laughter, music, flour and 13 metric tons of butter. \n\nShe's still doing it today. Shes a bad ass and She's my favorite. \n\nKEXP has been playing in our home ever since. Thank you!\""

I also feel so much gratitude. I am grateful for how much time we had together and how much she wanted to give me and everybody to spend time with her. I’m grateful for all of the care and love she received during her illness and death. Everybody that we interacted with, and all of the people who helped behind the scenes at Fred Hutch, and the providers at Whitby home hospice, enabled her to navigate her illness and death on her terms, which was so important to her. I was able to be with my mom when she died. The next day I found out my extremely sweet and close dog, Penny, I was going to lose lose her too. \n\nI learned so much for my mom including a love for animals. And one of her favorite songs was \"Teach Your Children Well\" by Crosby stills Nash and Young. Love if you could play it a memory of her and Penny. Love to all feeling your feelings today, it helps me to know that there’s so many out there going through similar difficulties.\""

My best friend Eric died of aggressive brain cancer a year ago in March after a brutal year and a half battle that ravaged his mind and body. I have a memorial tattoo on my arm for him, of a refrigerator because his nickname since college was forever The Fridge. I wrote a song, \"Howl\" by CJN, for him in the midst of that battle. It would mean the world to me if you'd consider playing it today. \n\nBut if not then I'd also love to hear a song by Hot Chip or LCD Soundsystem or Cut Copy because he loved dancing and those were the bands we danced to the most over our 20 years of best friendship. Thank you in any event for this day itself. This station is so unique and special."

"text": "From Tasha in Duvall, WA (for husband Mark):\n\nMy husband, Mark Jensen, passed away from a rare peritoneal cancer on Feb 27th. A musician since junior high, he started on bass and played for the popular band, Red Platinum in the late 80's and early 90's. After playing in several other bands, he switched to playing drums. He started jamming with his long-time friends, Eric and Sean, and they soon formed Fuzz Droner, and they practiced and recorded everything in our garage, known as Studio 914. He mentioned several times he had the best life, being able to play with his best friends of 35 years and having nothing but fun. \n\nAt the end of 2024, his hospital stays were more frequent, and his treatments stopped working. But during each stay, every nurse, doctor, and technician knew he was a musician and told them to stay updated on their new album to be released soon. His final show was in January, and they packed the entire place, with all our friends and family, including his old band mates from Red Platinum. He always stayed friends with everyone and had a love for life that would make anyone smile. \n\nBeginning of Feb 2025, he was admitted again, but this time it was near the end. He told everyone on that floor he wasn't going anywhere till the album was in his hand. He was adamant about going home to wait for its release. The other Fuzz Droner guys worked around the clock to get the final mixes done to achieve that goal. I was able to bring him home 3 weeks later, patiently waiting for the album to come. He heard the final mix in the hospital, as well as at home. He was so proud of that album and his friends. He passed away just 4 days before we received the album, but he knew it was in good hands, and his end goal was achieved. I made sure to play it to on his final day. \n\nMark was the epitome of a caring, beautiful soul. If you met him, you always remembered him, and he always made you laugh. I am so fortunate for the people he brought into my life, and he is proof that the music community really does come together when we need it the most. I have maintained my connection with all of his bandmates, and consider them my true friends and family. Mark loved the Cars."

He had two abdominal surgeries about 10 years ago, now and I am happy to report he is still cancer free! I didn't know how scary the process was, because I was away at college at the time. But, in 2021 I had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor on my thyroid, I was 25. And I was so glad to have my dad help me through it. He still helps me through it, as I am on \"\"cancer watch\"\" for the rest of my life now (just like him). \n\nI am proud to say that my dad still swims competitively even after the surgeries and he has never given up his dream of competing and training. "text": "From Beeman (for dad):\n\n\"I lost my father on Saturday, 7 months after a small-cell lung cancer diagnosis. My dad's passing is not a tragedy, he lived 89 years richly and fully. I'm convinced that he had 10 more in him, but cancer had other ideas. \n\nMusic was my father's passion, in the early 60's he was a member of the Southcoasters, a folk trio in Houston inspired by the Kingston Trio and the Limelighters. Their \"\"big\"\" hit, Black Gold, reached #4 in Houston and #1 in Beaumont, and they opened for acts like Johnny Cash, Guy Clarke, and many others. His love of music persisted long after the Southcoasters, and I'm not sure he didn't love the production and mixing as much as playing. My sister and I, and now our children, grew up singing along to his renditions of folk classics. He approached life with patience, kindness, and joy; you were hard-pressed to find him in a bad mood. If you would be so kind, could you play M.T.A. by the Kingston Trio?\n\nThank you so much! Much love to KEXP, you are the soundtrack to my every workday!\""

My friend spent time in the Oncology ward at Swedish where we celebrated her birthday and is fortunately now back home, recovering, the bright light in this painful cancer journey.
