"text": "This was the band's first experiment in using the 5/4 time signature. \n--\nThe inspiration for the song came to Stu McKenzie almost subliminally. He said during an interview for Songwriters on Process, “I pulled up in my car to the barn and I left my lights on in my car. And my car used to make this — this old Ford that I had at the time — used to make this, like, alarm type sound when you left the lights on. It was like ‘hey, come turn your lights off.’ But it was in 5/4. The alarm itself was in 5/4… It was on for like, hours or something and I think it crept into my brain and it wasn’t until a few days later that I realized that the song I wrote has the exact same rhythm as the car alarm. And it was the first song we wrote that was in not 4/4 or whatever and it f**king blew my mind when I made this, like, connection. "text": "‘Within You Without You’ came about after I had spent a bit of time in India and fallen under the spell of the country and its music. I had brought back a lot of instruments. It was written at Klaus Voormann’s house in Hampstead after dinner one night. The song came to me when I was playing a pedal harmonium.\nI’d also spent a lot of time with Ravi Shankar, trying to figure out how to sit and hold the sitar, and how to play it. ‘Within You Without You’ was a song that I wrote based upon a piece of music of Ravi’s that he’d recorded for All-India Radio. It was a very long piece – maybe 30 or 40 minutes – and was written in different parts, with a progression in each. I wrote a mini version of it, using sounds similar to those I’d discovered in his piece. I recorded in three segments and spliced them together later.\n\nGeorge Harrison"
