That's Julia Laws on background vocals. \n--\nThe title was inspired by a sculpture by Angela Ellsworth, an Amish prairie bonnet filled with pins. Matt saw the sculpture at an art museum in Palm Springs, CA and texted himself the phrase “bonnet of pins.” He told SiriusXM that he built the rest of the song from that image, describing it as:\n\nA moment of reconnection with someone from your past or a ghost or something. "text": "On this date in 1980, Joy Division released \"Love Will Tear Us Apart.\"\n--\nDrummer Stephen Morris said, \"We had this one battle where it was nearly midnight and I said, “Is it all right if I go home, Martin [producer Martin Hannett] – it’s been a long day?” And he said [whispers], “OK … you go home”. So I went back to the flat. Just got to sleep and the phone rings. “Martin wants you to come back and do the snare drum”. At four in the morning! I said, “What’s wrong with the snare drum!?” So every time I hear “Love Will Tear Us Apart”, I grit my teeth and remember myself shouting down the phone, “YOU BASTARD!” … I can feel the anger in it even now. It’s a great song and it’s a great production, but I do get anguished every time I hear it.\"\nRead more about this great song: https://anglotopia.net/british-music-british-entertainment/routine-bites-hard-the-story-behind-joy-divisions-love-will-tear-us-apart/"

"text": "Hi John and Owen, \n\nMy 8-year-old son and I just arrived at the KEXP Gathering Space from Poulsbo. We rode our bikes onto the Bainbridge ferry and over to Seattle Center to see the Morning Show. Evan really wanted to hear the Friday song live for the first time. \n\nSince he was born, the KEXP Morning Show has been blasting in our kitchen each day with archives playing on the weekends. Through political disruption and pandemics. Whether living in NY, Denver, or Seattle. \n\nIf there's a moment where Evan can quickly meet John, it would make his summer. He's taken KEXP's mantra that he's \"not alone\" to heart - and shared that belief with others his age.\n\nThank you both for all that you do!\n\nGabe & Evan"

"text": "Hi John. My birthday is Sunday. I'm turning 60, can't believe it. Been listening to your show since I was 40, and it's keeping me young. Can you please play some Replacements for me? Maybe \"Bastards of Young\" would be appropriate. --Dan in DC\n--\n\"Tim\" was the group’s major label debut. Paul Westerberg wondered if his band of misfits belonged to the mainstream rock landscape. He worried The Replacements might be a tax write-off for Sire Records. A common practice with major labels was signing numerous bands, hoping a few stick, and using the others as tax deductions. \n\n\"Income tax deduction, what a hell of a function\nIt beats picking cotton or waiting to be forgotten\nWait on the sons of no one, bastards of young\nWait on the sons of no one, bastards of young\"\n\nAccording to Bob Mehr’s biography on the band, Trouble Boys: The True Story of The Replacements, Westerberg’s mother induced labor on New Year’s Eve for a tax deduction. So using a newborn baby or a band for a tax break profoundly affected Westerberg—it was an exclamation point to feeling unwanted.: \nhttps://americansongwriter.com/what-a-mess-on-the-ladder-of-success-the-misfit-approved-meaning-behind-bastards-of-young-by-the-replacements/"
