In the early 90’s, Massi joined the Algerian political rock band Atakor. With its political lyrics and growing popularity, the band became a target. Massi disguised herself by cutting her hair and dressing in male clothing, but she nevertheless became the target of a series of anonymous death threats. In 1999, she left the band and sought refuge in Paris, where she is currently based. After performing at the Femmes d'Algerie (\"Women of Algeria\") festival in Paris, Massi secured a recording contract with Island Records. Since then, Massi has recorded six solo albums, singing in both French and Arabic.

Here's her session here at KEXP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8TVp-neoKM","location":1,"location_name":"Default","play_type":"trackplay"}
