Havens taught himself an “open-tuning” guitar-playing style.  By re-tuning the strings on his guitar, he was able to play a number of chords just by strumming the guitar and sliding his thumb up and down the neck of his instrument.\n\nOne result was that Havens’ music is almost never a direct copy of another tune.
