Clocking in at just over a minute, it features Bowie painting a dark, cinematic picture of a post-apocalyptic Manhattan renamed \"Hunger City.\" It sets the stage for the album's gritty, glitter-rock narrative.\n\nThe fragmented, cut-up writing style of the narrative was heavily inspired by the literary techniques of Beat Generation writer William S.
