"comment": "Welcome to Aqui y Ahora: kexp.org/aquiyahora/\nA Classic in alternative Latin Music:\nThe music and thoughts of Lido Pimienta have that spice. That tang that makes you feel and think. It's a sensation she masters, experiences, and practices to perfection as she blends the songs she grew up with in her native Barranquilla, Colombia, with those she has created in her current home in Canada.\n\nWhat does it mean to be from a place? What does distance signify? The Afro-Indigenous Colombian-Canadian composer, producer, and singer will say it's a journey to the sublime, a constant attempt to honor her Caribbean roots as something beyond the exotic. This musical and political crusade is her way of representing and honoring her culture, her body, her language, and her flow. A Caribbean flow that is learned through songs, food, and conversations in her community.\n\nIn Episode 6 of El Sonido: Cancioneros, Albina Cabrera explores the songbook of Lido Pimienta and some of her recommended artists such as Roberto Carlos Lange (Helado Negro), Verito Asprilla, Meridian Brothers, Diego Goméz (Cerrero, Discos Pacifico), and Meridian Brothers. At the same time, we go through a songbook composed by Petrona Martínez, ABBA, Joe Arroyo, Nelly Furtado, Nidia Góngora, and many more.\n\nThe episode features contributions from official collaborators of El Sonido, two of the most respected voices in the Latin music scene in the United States: Katalina Eccleston, better known as La Gata, creator of Reggaetón con la Gata, a bilingual platform dedicated to the study of reggaeton from an antiracist and anticolonial perspective; and Jennifer Mota, a Dominican storyteller and audiovisual producer.\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZiYOGrPWkg",

Not only because our protagonists and their songbooks multiply by three, but also because it was the only chapter that was recorded almost entirely in Puerto Rico. For the fifth installment of the El Sonido podcast, our host Albina Cabrera decides to start her 2023 on the island while exploring part of Puerto Rico's current music scene. She will embark on this journey alongside the personal songbooks of iLe, Villano Antillano, and Buscabulla, who will connect their musical memories and experiences as Caribbean artists in Puerto Rico.\n\nWhat does it mean to be from a place? That's the question that resurfaces throughout the first season of El Sonido: Cancioneros and in this episode it dives into the waters of the Caribbean Sea to find the musical treasures that shaped the upbringing of the author of Nacarile, the pillars that forged the creator of La Sustancia X, and the constant experimentation of the creative minds behind Regresa. These three albums explore the future of Puerto Rican music and expand its horizons.\n\nFrom the influence of Charly García on Buscabulla to the paradigm shift brought by Tego Calderón's El Abayarde according to iLe and Villano Antillano, and including current gems like composer and performer Ana Macho or the guiding lights represented by Ivy Queen. In the sixth episode of El Sonido, we will literally travel to one of the musical hearts of Latin America, Puerto Rico, a stage that has the world's attention as the natural home of reggaeton and Bad Bunny, a figure who appears in this installment as a kind of spell.\nhttps://www.kexp.org/read/2023/6/23/ile-villano-antillano-y-buscabulla-the-new-order/",

Mixing Latin soul, doo-wop, and the urgency of street protest, this track opens the legendary Riot! album—one of Fania’s biggest sellers. Bataan, an Afro-Filipino pioneer from Spanish Harlem, channeled the energy of Nuyorican life and Black-Latino solidarity into a sound that still moves bodies and minds. "comment": "If Los Bitchos’ electrifying 2022 debut album Let the Festivities Begin! was the rowdy build up to the big night out, then Talkie Talkie is the Technicolor explosion of the dancefloor. From dynamic guitar riffs to infectious beats, it represents a bold step forward in their unique blend of global rock'n'roll influences. It was produced by the band with Oli Barton-Wood (Wet Leg, Nilüfer Yanya) and engineer Giles Barrett.\n\nhttps://losbitchos.bandcamp.com/album/talkie-talkie",
