The song evolved over the ensuing months, including changes in key, tempo, and arrangement, until sometime in the summer of 1969, when it was paired, for the first time, with “I Know You Rider.” Once that pairing became the standard, it was locked in, with the single exception noted in DeadBase being a March 9, 1985 version where it went into “Cumberland Blues.” \n\nChina Cat remained steadily the repertoire, with the exception of the years 1975-1978, when it was played just once, in 1977. Overall, it was performed live 552 times that we know of, making it the fifth most-played song by the band, and number one in songs sung by Garcia.\n\nhttps://www.dead.net/features/greatest-stories-ever-told/greatest-stories-ever-told-china-cat-sunflower", "location": 1, "location_name": "Default", "play_type": "trackplay" }, { "id": 3607627, "uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3607627/?format=api", "airdate": "2026-01-22T11:38:32-08:00", "show": 65723, "show_uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/65723/?format=api", "image_uri": "", "thumbnail_uri": "", "comment": "", "location": 1, "location_name": "Default", "play_type": "airbreak" }, { "id": 3607626, "uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3607626/?format=api", "airdate": "2026-01-22T11:34:36-08:00", "show": 65723, "show_uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/65723/?format=api", "image_uri": "https://dn720700.ca.archive.org/0/items/mbid-5f67534a-65d4-4559-9551-65d77d1dd4be/mbid-5f67534a-65d4-4559-9551-65d77d1dd4be-43665490033_thumb500.jpg", "thumbnail_uri": "https://dn720700.ca.archive.org/0/items/mbid-5f67534a-65d4-4559-9551-65d77d1dd4be/mbid-5f67534a-65d4-4559-9551-65d77d1dd4be-43665490033_thumb250.jpg", "song": "Lipdance", "track_id": "e22847e8-484d-42ca-9cb6-49f21480e28f", "recording_id": "ef3e7111-1da8-441f-82eb-c993b160e187", "artist": "Obongjayar", "artist_ids": [ "9fef8897-8e04-455c-9ac4-cb4c0f855dc5" ], "album": "Paradise Now & Forever", "release_id": "5f67534a-65d4-4559-9551-65d77d1dd4be", "release_group_id": "e3ea0e1c-ef3c-4cb6-9d94-edfcdf8d4e1c", "labels": [ "September Recordings" ], "label_ids": [ "e7099b24-bdbe-44f3-9388-13ef84eebaaf" ], "release_date": "2025-11-20", "rotation_status": "Medium", "is_local": false, "is_request": false, "is_live": false, "comment": "In November, the Nigerian British pop star (Stephen Umoh) followed up his May release of 'Paradise Now' with an additional EP called 'Paradise Now & Forever'.\n--\nEnjoy this feature on Obongjayar : https://www.theguardian.com/music/2025/apr/20/performing-is-not-some-gigantic-thing-its-just-me-breathing-obongjayar-on-the-journey-from-shyness-to-stardom", "location": 1, "location_name": "Default", "play_type": "trackplay" }, { "id": 3607625, "uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3607625/?format=api", "airdate": "2026-01-22T11:30:31-08:00", "show": 65723, "show_uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/65723/?format=api", "image_uri": "https://dn710102.ca.archive.org/0/items/mbid-b2d36027-338b-45df-91d1-b5a4175a7542/mbid-b2d36027-338b-45df-91d1-b5a4175a7542-43785501255_thumb500.jpg", "thumbnail_uri": "https://dn710102.ca.archive.org/0/items/mbid-b2d36027-338b-45df-91d1-b5a4175a7542/mbid-b2d36027-338b-45df-91d1-b5a4175a7542-43785501255_thumb250.jpg", "song": "Fake Like", "track_id": "8f80c907-0bc4-43d8-8e8e-58d95a832538", "recording_id": "682e8458-958f-4888-b9a1-b80c96e6aab7", "artist": "The Afghan Whigs", "artist_ids": [ "2feb192c-2363-46d6-b476-1c88a25cb294" ], "album": "Fake Like / Downtown", "release_id": "b2d36027-338b-45df-91d1-b5a4175a7542", "release_group_id": "dbb6e6ea-af2a-4b1f-9658-8640ca1add41", "labels": [ "Royal Cream", "BMG" ], "label_ids": [ "51f1b632-4f4f-44fc-9907-03ede28ea157", "82ef9b02-7b42-49fe-a6bc-0d8ba816d72f" ], "release_date": "2025-12-10", "rotation_status": "Medium", "is_local": false, "is_request": false, "is_live": false, "comment": "Did you know that this year marks the 40th anniversary of The Afghan Whigs?\n\nThey have just released two new tracks, both covers. \"Fake Like\" is a cover of Minneapolis-based indie band Poliça and \"Downtown\" is a cover of Still Corners. \n--\nThe band is celebrating their 40th year with a newly announced 20-date tour that includes Mercury Rev supporting them. I don't think there's a song that we could have come up with that would have been as far away from [1998 LP] A Series of Sneaks as that one.
