"comment": "Digable Planets, founded by Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler, Craig “Cee-Knowledge the Doodlebug” Irvin and Mary Ann “Ladybug Mecca” Veiria, entered the music scene in the early 1990s. Their debut album release “Reachin’” in 1993 was a chart-topper, leading to their radio and commercial success. The group won a Grammy for best new artist, selling over a half million units. Destined to be the next big thing in hip-hop, Digable Planets threw the music world a curveball in their sophomore album release, “Blowout Comb”, the following year. The tracks were taken to the next level, with their mind-blowing fusion of jazz, hip hop, and spoken verse. Despite the lukewarm audience reaction at the time of its release, Blowout Comb” is a paragon of “intelligent” rap, funny and weird and catchy and incredibly smart all at once. The album’s cumulative power lies in its ability to simultaneously bring revolutionary thinking and a celebration of blackness to the table. https://wdet.org/2020/12/24/liner-notes-exploring-the-genius-of-digable-planets-blowout-comb/",

Sudan shares how the song was born: “I remember the beat sounded like A Bug’s Life — I used to play the A Bug’s Life video game — and I laughed at it.” She also explains the geographical journey of its creation: started in Los Angeles, expanded in Detroit, and finished in Chicago with a quartet.",

"comment": "Say She She will be performing January 31st at the Showbox in Seattle. --- This new single, “Disco Life,” from Say She She's latest album Cut & Rewind is based on the disturbing story of the infamous “Disco Demolition Night,” a notorious promotion held on July 12th, 1979, at Chicago’s Comiskey Park during a White Sox doubleheader. Organized by radio DJ Steve Dahl, it invited fans to bring disco records to be blown up on the field between games. The stunt drew more than 50,000 people—far exceeding expectations—and spiraled out of control. After the explosion, thousands of attendees stormed the field, causing chaos and forcing the White Sox to forfeit the second game. The event became a cultural flashpoint, symbolizing the backlash against disco but also drawing criticism for its undertones of racism and homophobia, since disco was closely tied to Black, Latino, and LGBTQ communities. -- “We wanted to reclaim that space and make it a playing field where all are free,” Say She She explained. “So we turned it into a discodelic dancefloor with our words, and every four on the floor drum beat is hopefully a stitch sewn.” -- Here's a Guardian interview with the trio published September 5th: tinyurl.com",
