Organized by radio DJ Steve Dahl, it invited fans to bring disco records to be blown up on the field between games. The stunt drew more than 50,000 people—far exceeding expectations—and spiraled out of control. After the explosion, thousands of attendees stormed the field, causing chaos and forcing the White Sox to forfeit the second game. The event became a cultural flashpoint, symbolizing the backlash against disco but also drawing criticism for its undertones of racism and homophobia, since disco was closely tied to Black, Latino, and LGBTQ communities.\n--\n“We wanted to reclaim that space and make it a playing field where all are free,” Say She She explained. “So we turned it into a discodelic dancefloor with our words, and every four on the floor drum beat is hopefully a stitch sewn.”\n--\n\nHere's a Guardian interview with the trio published September 5th: https://tinyurl.com/58w6x39n\n\nhttps://www.saysheshe.com/", "location": 1, "location_name": "Default", "play_type": "trackplay" }, { "id": 3580546, "uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3580546/?format=api", "airdate": "2025-11-20T06:33:03-08:00", "show": 65159, "show_uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/65159/?format=api", "image_uri": "https://ia600203.us.archive.org/8/items/mbid-ea7e7baa-43cb-4ebb-8f7b-c21f09be0313/mbid-ea7e7baa-43cb-4ebb-8f7b-c21f09be0313-31654206423_thumb500.jpg", "thumbnail_uri": "https://ia600203.us.archive.org/8/items/mbid-ea7e7baa-43cb-4ebb-8f7b-c21f09be0313/mbid-ea7e7baa-43cb-4ebb-8f7b-c21f09be0313-31654206423_thumb250.jpg", "song": "I Feel Love", "track_id": "dc9382c9-b1f5-3db9-9dfc-a118afbcf13a", "recording_id": "232b8e6e-0aa5-4310-8df3-583047af3126", "artist": "Donna Summer", "artist_ids": [ "b60527cc-54f3-4bbe-a01b-dcf34c95ae14" ], "album": "Machine Soul: An Odyssey Into Electronic Dance Music", "release_id": "ea7e7baa-43cb-4ebb-8f7b-c21f09be0313", "release_group_id": "e1c7ce40-45f4-3e5f-aba4-9a1f4b3e3ee9", "labels": [ "Rhino" ], "label_ids": [ "c4f2cf49-b57c-4cc1-8061-f54400704ac4" ], "release_date": "2000-03-14", "rotation_status": null, "is_local": false, "is_request": false, "is_live": false, "comment": "\"I Feel Love\" was a global smash, reaching No. 1 in several countries (including the UK, where its reign at the top lasted a full month) and rising to No. 6 in America. But its impact reached far beyond the disco scene in which singer Donna Summer and her producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte were already well established. Post-punk and new wave groups admired and appropriated its innovative sound, the maniacal precision of its grid-like groove of sequenced synth-pulses. \n\nhttps://pitchfork.com/features/article/song-from-the-future-the-story-of-donna-summer-and-giorgio-moroders-i-feel-love/", "location": 1, "location_name": "Default", "play_type": "trackplay" }, { "id": 3580545, "uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3580545/?format=api", "airdate": "2025-11-20T06:30:58-08:00", "show": 65159, "show_uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/65159/?format=api", "image_uri": "", "thumbnail_uri": "", "comment": "", "location": 1, "location_name": "Default", "play_type": "airbreak" }, { "id": 3580544, "uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3580544/?format=api", "airdate": "2025-11-20T06:27:48-08:00", "show": 65159, "show_uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/65159/?format=api", "image_uri": "https://ia600701.us.archive.org/21/items/mbid-99736234-b387-4f2a-b308-a3b06f0ce085/mbid-99736234-b387-4f2a-b308-a3b06f0ce085-40450491828_thumb500.jpg", "thumbnail_uri": "https://dn710101.ca.archive.org/0/items/mbid-99736234-b387-4f2a-b308-a3b06f0ce085/mbid-99736234-b387-4f2a-b308-a3b06f0ce085-40450491828_thumb250.jpg", "song": "Southern Life (What It Must Be Like)", "track_id": "8e22f824-10cb-481a-b5be-9cdc417eea15", "recording_id": "eb289454-9fb3-4e0f-af98-da498e2da40c", "artist": "Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory", "artist_ids": [ "5a2e9cd3-010a-4aae-9f83-629253284202" ], "album": "Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory", "release_id": "99736234-b387-4f2a-b308-a3b06f0ce085", "release_group_id": "cdd03b77-429e-4fa4-82e2-452c82257e31", "labels": [ "Jagjaguwar" ], "label_ids": [ "42e06800-76f8-4a5b-a9b6-0983a5d72f17" ], "release_date": "2025-02-07", "rotation_status": "Library", "is_local": false, "is_request": false, "is_live": false, "comment": "Sharon Van Etten and the Attachment Theory performed this song live in the KEXP studio back in May.
