I think I got mine for 12 bucks, and it was being sold for like $650. The ultimate one as far as being co-opted was that there was a guy on TV, predictably patterned, I guess, after the way I was looking those days, with long hair and an Army T-shirt. They put this new character on a soap opera, so there was a guy, more handsome than I, parading around on General Hospital. Many of these ended up in the songs, such as a train whistle played by Doughty on \"Uh, Zoom Zip.\"\n\nThis was in keeping with Tchad Blake's spirit of maverick experimentation, which included sticking a binaural head-shaped microphone in front of Yuval Gabay's drumkit, sticking a mic in a car muffler, called \"the Bone\" and sticking that in the drum booth as well, and having Doughty improvise wild, yelling ad-libs on \"Casiotone Nation,\" singing into a cheap amplification system called an Ahuja that Blake bought in India. The speaker was essentially a huge bullhorn atop a stick.\n\nThe album's lone guest is Rachel Benbow Murdy, band founder Mike Doughty's ex-girlfriend, who supplies a vocal on \"Janine.\" Doughty had Murdy go out to a payphone in Sheridan Square in New York and sing a rendition of \"Lemon Tree\" with an improvised melody into their answering machine.\n\nRecorded a year before the Ruby sessions, Doughty and bass player Sebastian Steinberg recorded the tune at the avant-garde jazz club The Knitting Factory during the daytime, when the club was closed, with club soundperson James McLean. McLean put a mic on the answering machine, which Doughty had brought to the session. https://tinyurl.com/mwteec4p", "location": 1, "location_name": "Default", "play_type": "trackplay" }, { "id": 3562611, "uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3562611/?format=api", "airdate": "2025-10-08T06:39:24-07:00", "show": 64777, "show_uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/64777/?format=api", "image_uri": "https://coverartarchive.org/release/46a2f184-ef38-4025-a6e8-c0507f790d90/5358642722-500.jpg", "thumbnail_uri": "https://coverartarchive.org/release/46a2f184-ef38-4025-a6e8-c0507f790d90/5358642722-250.jpg", "song": "Needles in the Camel’s Eye", "track_id": null, "recording_id": "f5f23de7-c15b-4978-99ed-dee21d7d5e12", "artist": "Brian Eno", "artist_ids": [ "ff95eb47-41c4-4f7f-a104-cdc30f02e872" ], "album": "Here Come the Warm Jets", "release_id": null, "release_group_id": "90d9be4c-30be-3e28-949a-66ee22c3a63a", "labels": [ "Island" ], "label_ids": [ "dfd92cd3-4888-46d2-b968-328b1feb2642" ], "release_date": "1973-11-01", "rotation_status": null, "is_local": false, "is_request": false, "is_live": false, "comment": "#364 Favorite Album of All Time - Brian Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets", "location": 1, "location_name": "Default", "play_type": "trackplay" }, { "id": 3562604, "uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3562604/?format=api", "airdate": "2025-10-08T06:33:35-07:00", "show": 64777, "show_uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/64777/?format=api", "image_uri": "", "thumbnail_uri": "", "comment": "kexp.org/donate", "location": 1, "location_name": "Default", "play_type": "airbreak" }, { "id": 3562603, "uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3562603/?format=api", "airdate": "2025-10-08T06:31:10-07:00", "show": 64777, "show_uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/64777/?format=api", "image_uri": "https://ia801507.us.archive.org/11/items/mbid-f515129c-e02b-4ff6-af1a-aa8e1a081ea8/mbid-f515129c-e02b-4ff6-af1a-aa8e1a081ea8-16111764504_thumb500.jpg", "thumbnail_uri": "https://ia601507.us.archive.org/11/items/mbid-f515129c-e02b-4ff6-af1a-aa8e1a081ea8/mbid-f515129c-e02b-4ff6-af1a-aa8e1a081ea8-16111764504_thumb250.jpg", "song": "Family Affair", "track_id": "312466a4-fd6e-3a0e-8dfd-8114229e796c", "recording_id": "e007b469-f424-490b-b3f2-ff21f12d1989", "artist": "Sly & the Family Stone", "artist_ids": [ "b7ec4c54-1f93-4bf2-957f-7b9921ab84ea" ], "album": "There's a Riot Goin' On", "release_id": "f515129c-e02b-4ff6-af1a-aa8e1a081ea8", "release_group_id": "d8b8448a-2634-3e92-ac86-cf55e018f825", "labels": [ "Epic" ], "label_ids": [ "8f638ddb-131a-4cc3-b3d4-7ebdac201b55" ], "release_date": "1971-11-01", "rotation_status": "Library", "is_local": false, "is_request": false, "is_live": false, "comment": "#365 Favorite Album of All Time - Sly & the Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On", "location": 1, "location_name": "Default", "play_type": "trackplay" }, { "id": 3562601, "uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3562601/?format=api", "airdate": "2025-10-08T06:27:14-07:00", "show": 64777, "show_uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/64777/?format=api", "image_uri": "https://ia601807.us.archive.org/35/items/mbid-1123137a-295d-4c19-9dad-76ea01bc656a/mbid-1123137a-295d-4c19-9dad-76ea01bc656a-28314714742_thumb500.jpg", "thumbnail_uri": "https://dn721803.ca.archive.org/0/items/mbid-1123137a-295d-4c19-9dad-76ea01bc656a/mbid-1123137a-295d-4c19-9dad-76ea01bc656a-28314714742_thumb250.jpg", "song": "Kool Thing", "track_id": "a52bec0c-da82-3f39-90b5-57ae038cb332", "recording_id": "a35faf90-4293-48c9-9e36-ba9dd13533a6", "artist": "Sonic Youth", "artist_ids": [ "5cbef01b-cc35-4f52-af7b-d0df0c4f61b9" ], "album": "Goo", "release_id": "1123137a-295d-4c19-9dad-76ea01bc656a", "release_group_id": "8114542a-d659-3b5f-a11f-cf86ed7fa84d", "labels": [ "Geffen Records" ], "label_ids": [ "0fadc2ce-f7de-4e27-bbe6-612b317e716b" ], "release_date": "2005-09-13", "rotation_status": null, "is_local": false, "is_request": false, "is_live": false, "comment": "#366 Favorite Album of All Time - Sonic Youth - Dirty\n\n\"Kool Thing\" was a product of an interview that went very wrong.
