Though a relatively obscure figure, Russell was instrumental in bringing disco out of the Studio 54s and into the downtown lofts and art spaces of New York during the late 1970s and early '80s.\n\nThis song was inspired by Arthur Russell's childhood summer vacations to Minnesota, where his father would pack the car early and leave before sunrise, to avoid the mid-day heat. \n\nThe songs selected for Calling Out of Context were recorded by Russell at his home and various studios between 1985 and 1990. The tracks were taken from Russell's unreleased 1985 album Corn and a later unfinished album for Rough Trade Records. Some of the songs, including \"That's Us/Wild Combination\", were meticulously reworked and rerecorded dozens of times by Russell, up until his death in 1992.\n\nLearn more about Arthur Russell in this documentary \"Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell\" by director Matt Wolf: http://www.arthurrussellmovie.com/", "location": 1, "location_name": "Default", "play_type": "trackplay" }, { "id": 3556378, "uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3556378/?format=api", "airdate": "2025-09-22T15:46:05-07:00", "show": 64634, "show_uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/64634/?format=api", "image_uri": "", "thumbnail_uri": "", "comment": "", "location": 1, "location_name": "Default", "play_type": "airbreak" }, { "id": 3556377, "uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3556377/?format=api", "airdate": "2025-09-22T15:40:59-07:00", "show": 64634, "show_uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/64634/?format=api", "image_uri": "https://ia802309.us.archive.org/24/items/mbid-8c0935be-266f-485f-b465-c57ab13a67b3/mbid-8c0935be-266f-485f-b465-c57ab13a67b3-11056278771_thumb500.jpg", "thumbnail_uri": "https://ia802309.us.archive.org/24/items/mbid-8c0935be-266f-485f-b465-c57ab13a67b3/mbid-8c0935be-266f-485f-b465-c57ab13a67b3-11056278771_thumb250.jpg", "song": "Please Set Me at Ease", "track_id": "a0303df4-5103-3afc-824f-8a25355ae772", "recording_id": "e7f9e1c1-95a2-41f9-9e09-b58da9ffcbcc", "artist": "Madlib", "artist_ids": [ "ea9078ef-20ca-4506-81ea-2ae5fe3a42e8" ], "album": "Shades of Blue", "release_id": "8c0935be-266f-485f-b465-c57ab13a67b3", "release_group_id": "ce569c5b-b67b-3e0c-b4c0-04d916d13891", "labels": [ "Blue Note" ], "label_ids": [ "713c4a95-6616-442b-9cf6-14e1ddfd5946" ], "release_date": "2003-06-24", "rotation_status": null, "is_local": false, "is_request": false, "is_live": false, "comment": "Madlib’s deep love of jazz (his uncle is trumpeter Jon Faddis) is apparent throughout this visionary album which features remixes, reimaginations, and reinterpretations of classics by Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, The Three Sounds, Ronnie Foster, Bobby Hutcherson, Andrew Hill, Wayne Shorter, and more.\n--\nHere, he sampled Bobbi Humphrey's 1975 track \"Please Set Me at Ease.\" Want to hear the original?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBcmjf-9Flg", "location": 1, "location_name": "Default", "play_type": "trackplay" }, { "id": 3556375, "uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3556375/?format=api", "airdate": "2025-09-22T15:34:01-07:00", "show": 64634, "show_uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/64634/?format=api", "image_uri": "https://ia800307.us.archive.org/26/items/mbid-abc2013c-b852-416d-967d-d6a3f21780cf/mbid-abc2013c-b852-416d-967d-d6a3f21780cf-42265177378_thumb500.jpg", "thumbnail_uri": "https://dn721508.ca.archive.org/0/items/mbid-abc2013c-b852-416d-967d-d6a3f21780cf/mbid-abc2013c-b852-416d-967d-d6a3f21780cf-42265177378_thumb250.jpg", "song": "Gnawa", "track_id": "b57a8618-1d3c-4287-b932-dabb06f811a3", "recording_id": "3d890134-148d-4eb6-9acf-0016c0d2a29d", "artist": "Ami Taf Ra feat. The song explores new origins of inspiration, reminiscent of traditional French songwriters like Edith Piaf. Although there is a stylistic shift taking place, Dominique’s signature vocals shine through.\"\n\n“Moi je t’aime” envelops the listener in a deeply romantic mood, as Dominique’s tone conveys a haunting sense of heartache.
