He grew up in San Francisco, studied trumpet at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, but was trained to be a doctor when he permanently chose music. Henderson worked with John Handy, Tyrone Washington, and Joe Henderson, in addition to his own group. He gained some recognition for his work with the Herbie Hancock Sextet (1970-1973), although his own records (which utilized electronics) tended to be commercial. After Hancock broke up his group, Henderson worked with Art Blakey and Mike Nock, recorded with Charles Earland, and later, in the 1970s, led a rock-oriented group. In the ’90s, he returned to playing acoustic hard bop (touring with Billy Harper in 1991) while also working as a psychiatrist.", "location": 1, "location_name": "Default", "play_type": "trackplay" }, { "id": 3545747, "uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3545747/?format=api", "airdate": "2025-08-28T04:55:44-07:00", "show": 64406, "show_uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/64406/?format=api", "image_uri": "", "thumbnail_uri": "", "comment": "", "location": 1, "location_name": "Default", "play_type": "airbreak" }, { "id": 3545746, "uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3545746/?format=api", "airdate": "2025-08-28T04:51:41-07:00", "show": 64406, "show_uri": "https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/64406/?format=api", "image_uri": "https://coverartarchive.org/release/90f3f3b9-8492-3f66-a660-cdbc5fc4d4ad/3461604768-500.jpg", "thumbnail_uri": "https://coverartarchive.org/release/90f3f3b9-8492-3f66-a660-cdbc5fc4d4ad/3461604768-250.jpg", "song": "Sweet Love", "track_id": null, "recording_id": "28052b0f-1296-424a-80c5-2023dc3b99da", "artist": "Anita Baker", "artist_ids": [ "02349767-d5ac-4528-892d-17b6d40107a1" ], "album": "Rapture", "release_id": null, "release_group_id": "b544c1b2-9190-34ac-8d03-348c86a77cb2", "labels": [ "Elektra" ], "label_ids": [ "873f9f75-af68-4872-98e2-431058e4c9a9" ], "release_date": "1986-08-01", "rotation_status": null, "is_local": false, "is_request": false, "is_live": false, "comment": "Going out to Rafael in Lima, Peru!\n\n1986's 'Rapture' is the second album by Anita Baker - it became her breakout album, earning her two Grammy Awards. Verlaine primarily used a 1958 Jazzmaster with a sunburst finish, anodized aluminum pickguard and two single-coil soapbar pickups, while Lloyd largely played a ’61 Stratocaster with jumbo frets, both typically through Fender Super Reverbs.
