With six previous albums in their back catalog, plus collaborations and backing gigs with the likes of Prince, Spoon and Los Lobos, not to mention a GRAMMY award and a loyal fan base, they are ready to turn people’s heads again with American Music: Vol. VII (Blue Corn Music).\n\nhttps://www.grupofantasma.com/home",

"comment": "The boundary-pushing Colombian group returns to Soundway Records with another unique album: dreamy psych-folk, blending traditional Latin rock with tropicalia, and lush string and choral arrangements.\n\nMeridian Brothers’ sound is a huge palette of influences and inspirations. Drawing from traditional Latin rock (including Colombian, Argentinian and Mexican) as well as Brazilian tropicalia, for this album Alvarez incorporates string instruments - in particular the cello, both bowed and plucked - a timbre rarely used in his previous works.\n\nhttps://meridianbrothers.bandcamp.com/album/d-nde-est-s-mar-a",

"comment": "(Byrne says it was the last thing Selena recorded before her death.) It’s kind of two songs, one sung by Byrne in English and the other sung by Selena in Spanish. There’s a prominent bass line and a worldly drum beat (this is a David Byrne song, after all), and their voices blend together perfectly, hers wrapping around his like silks on a body on a windy day. Beyond the joy of dancing to it, listening to “God’s Child (Baila Conmigo)” makes me even sadder that we missed out on decades of Selena’s music. If she was collaborating with a celebrated art rocker before her English language debut, what beautiful places would she have taken us had she been allowed to keep going?\n\nhttps://www.davidbyrne.com/explore/american-utopia/press/texas-monthly-recommends-selena-and-david",

"comment": "It’s hard to identify anything traditionally “Brazilian” about Oruã’s sound, but the band comes from a centuries-long tradition of resistance. They come from Brazil’s indigenous people defying the seizure of their land. They come from a series of slave rebellions in Brazil, which continued until slavery was finally outlawed in 1888, the last country in the Americas to do so. They come from quilombos, communities around the country that were organized by fugitive slaves. They come from the traditions of Candomblé and Umbanda, syncretic religions of African origin with strong musical components that for centuries were often practiced in secret, practitioners claiming they were Catholic to avoid persecution. \n\nhttps://orua.bandcamp.com/album/passe",
