If not, it's certainly in the running. It could also be called a song of woman's empowerment, perhaps even one of feminism (if a listener were so inclined).\n\nThe song is best known today for being a staple of the Grateful Dead's live set, but it can be traced back definitively to early 1800s England. The oldest broadside version, held by the Bodleian Libraries of Oxford University, is dated between 1812 and 1825. At that time, the song was titled \"Jack Munro.\"\n\nThe song is about a young woman who dresses as a sailor in order to find her lover, Jack. She's the daughter of a wealthy merchant, yet elects to put herself in grave danger in order to get her sweetheart back. The naval men notice her slight build and question if she can succeed in battle, but she proves her mettle, finds her wounded Jack, gets him to a doctor, and marries him.\n\nThe Dead's version leaves out a bit of the traditional song's lyrics but keeps the gist of things. Nothing substantive is lost, but in some traditional variations there are more details about the central character's relationship with her father.","location":1,"location_name":"Default","play_type":"trackplay"},{"id":3642770,"uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3642770/?format=json","airdate":"2026-04-16T10:24:32-07:00","show":66468,"show_uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/66468/?format=json","image_uri":"https://dn710902.ca.archive.org/0/items/mbid-b3d4dc24-fc81-4f5e-a43e-e60782b7ad2f/mbid-b3d4dc24-fc81-4f5e-a43e-e60782b7ad2f-6212251423_thumb500.jpg","thumbnail_uri":"https://dn710902.ca.archive.org/0/items/mbid-b3d4dc24-fc81-4f5e-a43e-e60782b7ad2f/mbid-b3d4dc24-fc81-4f5e-a43e-e60782b7ad2f-6212251423_thumb250.jpg","song":"Look at Miss Ohio","track_id":"6c3b0aed-7ba6-3579-acf6-10b9ec32312d","recording_id":"e509798d-f62e-489f-9505-ecf6e546cebb","artist":"Gillian Welch","artist_ids":["2ff49515-1701-4bac-a53a-04345893f3f3"],"album":"Soul Journey","release_id":"b3d4dc24-fc81-4f5e-a43e-e60782b7ad2f","release_group_id":"cf71f2e5-2cfe-3652-b572-8f24560f44b0","labels":["Acony Records"],"label_ids":["2cf5b679-cad4-442b-9a4d-2e474c13fb90"],"release_date":"2003-06-03","rotation_status":"Library","is_local":false,"is_request":false,"is_live":false,"comment":"\"Gillian Welch first appeared on the folk scene as a young singer/songwriter armed with a voice and sensibility far beyond her years, earning widespread acclaim for her deft, evocative resurrection of the musical styles most commonly associated with rural Appalachia of the early 20th century. It's the one whose video samples scenes from their Lynchian short film To Kill a Dead Man, whose images also make up the cover for the Dummy album. The album Dummy as a whole attracted critical acclaim and won the 1995 Mercury Music Prize. It is also credited with founding the Trip-Hop genre.\n\nThis song is, in fact, a very good demonstration of the Trip-Hop style: moody, a little psychedelic, and containing just a lick of R&B roots.\n\nThe eerie percussion and guitar were sampled from Lalo Schifrin's \"Danube Incident,\" music composed by the Argentine composer for an episode of Mission Impossible. http://tinyurl.com/y3sey4se","location":1,"location_name":"Default","play_type":"trackplay"},{"id":3642764,"uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3642764/?format=json","airdate":"2026-04-16T10:02:38-07:00","show":66467,"show_uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/66467/?format=json","image_uri":"","thumbnail_uri":"","song":"Boots on the Ground","track_id":null,"recording_id":null,"artist":"Massive Attack & Tom Waits","artist_ids":[],"album":"Boots on the Ground","release_id":null,"release_group_id":null,"labels":["Play It Again Sam"],"label_ids":["3ccd1270-99d3-4b83-a311-6c60e127c866"],"release_date":"2026-04-16","rotation_status":"Medium","is_local":false,"is_request":false,"is_live":false,"comment":"MASSIVE ATTACK and TOM WAITS have released a brand new protest song-- Massive Attack's first release to be withheld from Spotify, per their wishes.\n\nA statement from Massive Attack reads:\nIt’s a career honour to collaborate with an artist of the magnitude, originality and integrity of Tom, but this track is arriving in an atmosphere of chaos. Across the western hemisphere, state authoritarianism and the militarisation of police forces are fusing again with neo-fascist politics. Seen within the American emergency, at home and overseas, this track contains pulses of callous impulse & abandoned mind.\n\nAnd one from Tom Waits:\nOne day many years ago, I accepted an invitation from Massive Attack to collaborate. Their long release delay never worried me. Today, as in all of mankind's yesterdays, guarantees this type of song will never go out of style. Man's folly of fiascos is a feast for the flies.
