Zenzile Miriam Makeba, nicknamed Mama Africa, was a South African singer and civil rights activist known for becoming the first African artist to globally popularize African music. \nMakeba was born in Johannesburg, South Africa on March 4, 1932. Her professional career began when she was featured in the South African jazz group the Manhattan Brothers in the 1950s and made her U.S. debut on November 1, 1959 on The Steve Allen Show. While traveling to London she met Harry Belafonte who helped her gain entry into the US as well as fame there. She tried to return to South Africa in 1960 but discovered that her passport was cancelled, making her an exile. Later that year she signed with RCA Victor and released Miriam Makeba, her first U.S. studio album. \n\nThroughout the 1960s she spoke out against apartheid in South Africa. In 1968 she met and married prominent civil rights leader and Black Panther Stokely Carmichael, who she would go on to divorce in 1973. Makeba continued on in her activism and music career and in 1990 she would return to her home country of South Africa on a French passport after much persuasion by Nelson Mandela. Makeba died on November 9, 2008 after falling ill while taking part in a concert organised to support writer Roberto Saviano in his stand against the Camorra, a mafia-like organisation local to the Region of Campania. She was a strong supporter of human rights and continued her activism to her last breath.","location":1,"location_name":"Default","play_type":"trackplay"},{"id":3625268,"uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3625268/?format=json","airdate":"2026-03-04T15:50:01-08:00","show":66090,"show_uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/66090/?format=json","image_uri":"https://ia800104.us.archive.org/22/items/mbid-a684e89e-a6e5-4765-b47d-deb6cadd5ed8/mbid-a684e89e-a6e5-4765-b47d-deb6cadd5ed8-16968684270_thumb500.jpg","thumbnail_uri":"https://dn721806.ca.archive.org/0/items/mbid-a684e89e-a6e5-4765-b47d-deb6cadd5ed8/mbid-a684e89e-a6e5-4765-b47d-deb6cadd5ed8-16968684270_thumb250.jpg","song":"Don't Tell Your Mother","track_id":"7c3f0449-6fde-3a1b-9bea-d71a5c942bda","recording_id":"bda8918a-eb12-4219-b7bb-ebc550e7f567","artist":"The Sundays","artist_ids":["9df32318-47d5-4df7-bc68-3ed9e15eb0f6"],"album":"DGC Rarities, Volume 1","release_id":"a684e89e-a6e5-4765-b47d-deb6cadd5ed8","release_group_id":"c8a059e8-3922-3ff6-86d1-e94114f1e6f3","labels":["DGC Records"],"label_ids":["68803e28-86fe-4a95-985f-8e493795ab31"],"release_date":"1994-07-05","rotation_status":"Library","is_local":false,"is_request":false,"is_live":false,"comment":"Happy birthday to drummer Patrick Hannan, born on March 4th, 1966.\n\nWatch Harriet Wheeler and pals performing this one live in 1993: https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSundays/comments/1rbg9as/dont_tell_your_mother_live_pittsburg_06201993/","location":1,"location_name":"Default","play_type":"trackplay"},{"id":3625267,"uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3625267/?format=json","airdate":"2026-03-04T15:47:25-08:00","show":66090,"show_uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/66090/?format=json","image_uri":"https://dn710809.ca.archive.org/0/items/mbid-2ec701cc-e6c3-4bc0-822f-2dac4a411250/mbid-2ec701cc-e6c3-4bc0-822f-2dac4a411250-41018980386_thumb500.jpg","thumbnail_uri":"https://ia800607.us.archive.org/8/items/mbid-2ec701cc-e6c3-4bc0-822f-2dac4a411250/mbid-2ec701cc-e6c3-4bc0-822f-2dac4a411250-41018980386_thumb250.jpg","song":"It’s About Time","track_id":"66cf87f5-51dc-394f-bcfc-7908ae1d4e7a","recording_id":"bbe6d2f2-ffa5-47ff-9ec3-3b3cab48b002","artist":"The Lemonheads","artist_ids":["58a53082-a629-4ff1-a44d-7492d6f6e8fb"],"album":"Come On Feel The Lemonheads","release_id":"2ec701cc-e6c3-4bc0-822f-2dac4a411250","release_group_id":"57620a06-01d7-360b-867b-c4ac758de1e0","labels":["Atlantic"],"label_ids":["50c384a2-0b44-401b-b893-8181173339c7"],"release_date":"1993-10-12","rotation_status":null,"is_local":false,"is_request":false,"is_live":false,"comment":"Happy birthday to Evan Dando of The Lemonheads, born on this date in 1967.\n--\nSee The Lemonheads perform \"It's About Time\" live in Boston in 2024: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmbXhtBk_es","location":1,"location_name":"Default","play_type":"trackplay"},{"id":3625266,"uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3625266/?format=json","airdate":"2026-03-04T15:45:15-08:00","show":66090,"show_uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/66090/?format=json","image_uri":"","thumbnail_uri":"","song":"Deep Shadows","track_id":null,"recording_id":"8ea7747e-c4c9-4574-a49d-751307b9aba7","artist":"Little Ann","artist_ids":["4bca7a94-c3b4-4aa0-93d6-9c42c3d5d22a"],"album":"Nova Classics Soul 01","release_id":null,"release_group_id":"0d2bda81-12b6-4cb5-9e0a-0920447b2eb8","labels":["Nova Records"],"label_ids":["6acba500-b127-4f3d-b807-b5a2fe7b19a2"],"release_date":"2019-09-20","rotation_status":null,"is_local":false,"is_request":false,"is_live":false,"comment":"Going out to Joseph....\n\nOriginally from Chicago, \"Little Ann\" Bridgeforth showed promise early on, recording a single for the Ric-Tic label in 1969. But even though Detroit producer Dave Hamilton ushered her into the studio to lay down an album's worth of songs, her dreams of national exposure ultimately withered with time and neglect. For two decades, the tapes of that album quietly collected dust. It wasn't until 1990 that two British soul collectors came upon the album while digging through Hamilton's vaults. Thus began the slow discovery of Little Ann, as several of her songs turned up on compilations by the U.K.'s respected Ace/Kent imprint. Bridgeforth died in 2003, but she lived long enough to see her career enjoy an unlikely resurrection; she was even flown out to the U.K. to perform to adoring fans. \n--\nhttps://www.npr.org/2010/04/30/126415299/little-ann-40-years-later-an-unlikely-resurrection","location":1,"location_name":"Default","play_type":"trackplay"},{"id":3625265,"uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3625265/?format=json","airdate":"2026-03-04T15:43:55-08:00","show":66090,"show_uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/66090/?format=json","image_uri":"","thumbnail_uri":"","comment":"","location":1,"location_name":"Default","play_type":"airbreak"},{"id":3625264,"uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3625264/?format=json","airdate":"2026-03-04T15:39:33-08:00","show":66090,"show_uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/66090/?format=json","image_uri":"https://dn720701.ca.archive.org/0/items/mbid-4b615731-1555-48ac-b44c-6647ce816e73/mbid-4b615731-1555-48ac-b44c-6647ce816e73-43553675643_thumb500.jpg","thumbnail_uri":"https://ia902902.us.archive.org/2/items/mbid-4b615731-1555-48ac-b44c-6647ce816e73/mbid-4b615731-1555-48ac-b44c-6647ce816e73-43553675643_thumb250.jpg","song":"Grå labyrint","track_id":"689d8013-dd99-4dab-af0b-85b6976c0a5b","recording_id":"695c480a-a7c5-4dec-8427-a3fcf1585e65","artist":"Dina Ögon","artist_ids":["dd682352-d506-4d75-90cc-ff8daa0af05a"],"album":"Människobarn","release_id":"4b615731-1555-48ac-b44c-6647ce816e73","release_group_id":"771fef24-b289-4e55-bb3f-1efb70d7bc62","labels":["Playground Music"],"label_ids":["c446ebe7-a528-406e-9d88-a44aeb8907da"],"release_date":"2026-02-06","rotation_status":"Medium","is_local":false,"is_request":false,"is_live":false,"comment":"\"Dina ögon is like the lovechild of Fleetwood Mac, Eric B & Rakim, Khruangbin and some obscure Motown b-side singles.\" \n--\nLearn more about this Swedish quartet: https://playgroundmusic.com/artist/dina-ogon","location":1,"location_name":"Default","play_type":"trackplay"},{"id":3625262,"uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3625262/?format=json","airdate":"2026-03-04T15:36:32-08:00","show":66090,"show_uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/66090/?format=json","image_uri":"https://ia601909.us.archive.org/9/items/mbid-ecadd7ae-7b94-4f68-8efc-e02f6e64457e/mbid-ecadd7ae-7b94-4f68-8efc-e02f6e64457e-43645953946_thumb500.jpg","thumbnail_uri":"https://ia801909.us.archive.org/9/items/mbid-ecadd7ae-7b94-4f68-8efc-e02f6e64457e/mbid-ecadd7ae-7b94-4f68-8efc-e02f6e64457e-43645953946_thumb250.jpg","song":"The Wheel","track_id":"88874dbd-db1d-4a0f-b4f8-49bbaf94f65f","recording_id":"8a17f627-e27a-43b1-8e0d-96fd11dfea72","artist":"Ellur","artist_ids":["87490c2a-0fe6-4811-85f2-43c3d0a4beaf"],"album":"At Home in My Mind","release_id":"ecadd7ae-7b94-4f68-8efc-e02f6e64457e","release_group_id":"40bda527-763e-4401-9850-7ccc8eeac39a","labels":["Dance to the Radio"],"label_ids":["6160b3df-55f8-48e6-b982-ea7f3a6be763"],"release_date":"2026-02-06","rotation_status":"Heavy","is_local":false,"is_request":false,"is_live":false,"comment":"Ella McNamara – better known as Ellur, a nod to the Northern-accented pronunciation of her first name – is from a town called Halifax, England where everyone mostly knows everyone. “It’s such a beautiful place and I’m really proud of where I’m from. The song was going to be a sermon, telling people that love was in need of love.\"\n\nWhile working on the intro, he was reminded of the church radio programs he used to hear when he was a child. \"An announcer would come on and say, 'Good morning or good evening everyone in radioland.
