His sound fused Caribbean traditions with jazz, funk, and social consciousness, carrying Latin music from the streets of New York to global stages.\n\nThroughout this first hour, El Sonido revisits his legacy, collaborations, and the cultural bridges his work built across generations.\n\n“El Gran Varón,” written by Omar Alfanno in 1986 and performed by Willie Colón, tells the story of Simón, a trans woman rejected by her father who dies alone in New York from a “strange disease,” widely understood as a reference to HIV/AIDS.\n\nAlthough it was not released as a single, it became one of Colón’s most recognized songs.
