The anthem that anchored Spike Lee’s seminal Do The Right Thing, a film dedicated to racial animus on the hottest day in a Brooklyn summer, was originally supposed to be a Public Enemy-led jazz revamp of the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Lee had composer Terrence Blanchard on deck, but Bomb Squad producer Hank Shocklee pushed back, insisting that it wouldn’t resonate with fans of songs like “Bring The Noise” and “Night Of The Living Baseheads.”\n\nInstead, Chuck D, lead MC of the revolutionary rap group from Long Island, drew upon his days as a youth listening to the Isley Brothers in the 1970s. With atrocities like the 1986 murder of Michael Griffith still hanging in the arid air of the NYC pressure cooker, Chuck felt it was way past time for a song to address “all the bullshit goin’ down.”\n\nRead more about this powerful song here:\nhttps://www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/public-enemy-fight-the-power-song-feature/","location":1,"location_name":"Default","play_type":"trackplay"},{"id":3568164,"uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3568164/?format=json","airdate":"2025-10-21T18:03:57-07:00","show":64897,"show_uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/64897/?format=json","image_uri":"","thumbnail_uri":"","comment":"","location":1,"location_name":"Default","play_type":"airbreak"},{"id":3568162,"uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3568162/?format=json","airdate":"2025-10-21T18:00:48-07:00","show":64897,"show_uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/64897/?format=json","image_uri":"https://dn721704.ca.archive.org/0/items/mbid-92069356-027b-43a7-bb4e-ff5d9119631e/mbid-92069356-027b-43a7-bb4e-ff5d9119631e-43172251592_thumb500.jpg","thumbnail_uri":"https://dn721704.ca.archive.org/0/items/mbid-92069356-027b-43a7-bb4e-ff5d9119631e/mbid-92069356-027b-43a7-bb4e-ff5d9119631e-43172251592_thumb250.jpg","song":"WDID","track_id":"62f446a6-f5bb-4ec8-b16f-39284c9f4110","recording_id":"e3e050a8-b6ee-4e28-bce3-56a756999b7d","artist":"Sylvan Esso","artist_ids":["c4593b34-2a94-4e44-ae10-4a0f4c0b4da8"],"album":"WDID","release_id":"92069356-027b-43a7-bb4e-ff5d9119631e","release_group_id":"da1fed3b-f2bb-4ae5-a3b5-25dc3d75f882","labels":["Psychic Hotline"],"label_ids":["2589a508-4fa8-4bbd-a2ac-fef51c7abfc1"],"release_date":"2025-09-30","rotation_status":"Heavy","is_local":false,"is_request":false,"is_live":false,"comment":"Electro-pop duo Sylvan Esso have returned with their first new single in three years and announced their decision to pull their music from Spotify, partly in protest of co-founder Daniel Ek’s ties to Helsing, a German defense tech company with a particular focus on artificial intelligence. It plays at the end of the movie after the drug-dealing lead character Priest takes a stand against the white deputy commissioner, telling him, \"You don't own me, pig!\"\n\n\"It was a glorious moment for our people as blacks,\" Mayfield told Q magazine. \"Priest had a mind, he wanted to get out. For once, in spite of what he was doing, he got away. So there came 'Superfly' the song. He was trying to get over. We couldn't be so proud of him dealing coke or using coke, but at least the man had a mind and he wasn't just some ugly dead something in the streets after it was all over. He got out.\"\n\nAs a member of The Impressions, Mayfield was a huge part of the '60s civil rights movement thanks to songs like \"People Get Ready\" and \"This Is My Country.\" In the Super Fly film, he saw an opportunity to examine city life, and how drug culture affects African Americans. After seeing the screenplay, he jumped into the project and was given complete creative freedom. \n\nMayfield wrote the songs to suit the scenes, but he made sure they could stand on their own, telling the stories even without the visuals. \"Superfly\" works very well outside of the film, as the character Mayfield describes could relate to anyone trying to survive and thrive under difficult circumstances. https://tinyurl.com/559a8jt7","location":1,"location_name":"Default","play_type":"trackplay"},{"id":3568135,"uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3568135/?format=json","airdate":"2025-10-21T17:08:19-07:00","show":64897,"show_uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/64897/?format=json","image_uri":"https://dn721904.ca.archive.org/0/items/mbid-86c0eceb-c48e-42d0-8d6a-38383fe7bcb0/mbid-86c0eceb-c48e-42d0-8d6a-38383fe7bcb0-42515337293_thumb500.jpg","thumbnail_uri":"https://ia600906.us.archive.org/4/items/mbid-86c0eceb-c48e-42d0-8d6a-38383fe7bcb0/mbid-86c0eceb-c48e-42d0-8d6a-38383fe7bcb0-42515337293_thumb250.jpg","song":"MY TYPE","track_id":"64af7a3e-be6c-4e86-a3cf-22719b199ecf","recording_id":"62eb3d9b-0cf8-4413-89dd-fc160ccd4ca7","artist":"Sudan Archives","artist_ids":["6ce5eca0-4ad6-49e0-a5ab-e11482d85324"],"album":"THE BPM","release_id":"86c0eceb-c48e-42d0-8d6a-38383fe7bcb0","release_group_id":"f9e98ca4-0311-4f33-961f-f41154271ef0","labels":["Stones Throw Records"],"label_ids":["f1b83107-23e5-41a3-ab1b-2a36965cf77b"],"release_date":"2025-10-17","rotation_status":"Heavy","is_local":false,"is_request":false,"is_live":false,"comment":"The brand new studio album by singer, songwriter, and violinist Brittney Parks, aka Sudan Archives, released last week!\n\nThe album follows her critically acclaimed 2022 release Natural Brown Prom Queen and is said to blend club sounds from Detroit and Chicago with diverse dance styles.
