I recently got married to an amazing partner (her name is Amy) and we couldn't get to this gem. It also feels great to donate to the station (especially now with my new job). Thank you! Best, Juan\n--\nIn 1995, Jason Pierce – frontman and creative engine of Spiritualized – broke up with his long-time partner (and Spiritualized keyboardist) Kate Radley: a bitter enough situation even before learning that she had married The Verve’s Richard Ashcroft in secret during the same year. Despite Pierce’s claims that many songs from Ladies and Gentlemen were fully written before the fact, the effect that these revelations had on his performance on-record is palpable. The completed album is so unreservedly (and unapologetically) flooded with a melodramatic sense of loss (in words and in delivery) that it’s impossible to ignore its creative context.\n--\n\nThat voice at the beginning of this song is attributed to keyboardist Kate Radley.","location":1,"location_name":"Default","play_type":"trackplay"},{"id":3560772,"uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3560772/?format=json","airdate":"2025-10-03T07:26:13-07:00","show":64732,"show_uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/64732/?format=json","image_uri":"","thumbnail_uri":"","comment":"","location":1,"location_name":"Default","play_type":"airbreak"},{"id":3560771,"uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/plays/3560771/?format=json","airdate":"2025-10-03T07:22:26-07:00","show":64732,"show_uri":"https://api.kexp.org/v2/shows/64732/?format=json","image_uri":"https://ia903108.us.archive.org/10/items/mbid-cd21af5f-5ff9-4d9b-a0b7-0b7be02354d5/mbid-cd21af5f-5ff9-4d9b-a0b7-0b7be02354d5-24905684515_thumb500.jpg","thumbnail_uri":"https://ia803108.us.archive.org/10/items/mbid-cd21af5f-5ff9-4d9b-a0b7-0b7be02354d5/mbid-cd21af5f-5ff9-4d9b-a0b7-0b7be02354d5-24905684515_thumb250.jpg","song":"Karma Chameleon","track_id":"b58bb155-250f-4844-afc4-122e6fa4b2f9","recording_id":"f3a870a2-694b-479e-8b1b-1b881c645597","artist":"Culture Club","artist_ids":["81435053-e1a2-48a4-adfd-e89f310c7b38"],"album":"Colour by Numbers","release_id":"cd21af5f-5ff9-4d9b-a0b7-0b7be02354d5","release_group_id":"00490137-fa0b-3252-90f7-42b8eea8ae14","labels":["Virgin"],"label_ids":["49b58bdb-3d74-40c6-956a-4c4b46115c9c"],"release_date":"1983-10-10","rotation_status":"Library","is_local":false,"is_request":false,"is_live":false,"comment":"Boy George once explained about the song: \"The song is about the terrible fear of alienation that people have, the fear of standing up for one thing.\n\n\"It's about trying to suck up to everybody. The song debuted in 1968 and became the first gospel song to hit the secular charts.\n\nHawkins' use of contemporary sounds — a Latin groove, synthesizers, a soul-influenced lead vocal performance — created a new model for gospel music.
