"comment": "My name is Emily and I live in White Center.\n\nIn July of 2021 my dad was diagnosed with lymphoma. He found out because he has always sung and his vocal quality was changing and pressure in his throat. He went to see an ENT who recommended exploratory surgery. That doctor found something strange and referred dad to an oncologist who found the cancer. His main tumor was wrapped around his vocal cords like a snake, but the cancer was also in his stomach, lymph nodes and pancreas.\n\nI took paid time off (thank you Washington state!) to go to my parents’ home in New Jersey to care for him as he underwent three months of chemo. My mom’s mom died from cancer when my\nMom was only 16, and my dad’s diagnosis paralyzed her with fear, so she needed help. I listened to KEXP every day during that time to stay grounded, and connected to home\n\nMy dad is a serious and scholarly person. One very unexpected silver lining of being a cancer patient was how it allowed my dad to access a softer, sillier and even childlike part of himself.\n\nSomething that brought us joy and comfort was to rewatch episodes of Sesame Street and the Muppet Show that we enjoyed together when I was a child. That time we spent, holding hands on the couch, was incredibly special.\n\nWill you please play “Lime in the Coconut?” (Preferably Muppet version!) for my dad, Mark, who is cancer free and singing again professionally, with Mendelssohn Chorus; the oldest professional choir in the country.\n\nTHANK YOU!!!!",
