He broadcast as Radio Free Alcatraz during the Occupation of Alcatraz from 1969 to 1971, serving as the occupation's spokesperson.  Trudell was the son of a Santee Dakota father and a Mexican mother.  \n\nHe served as the chairman of the American Indian Movement through most of the 1970s, until the death of his pregnant wife Tina Manning, three children, and mother-in-law Leah Hicks-Manning in a suspicious fire on the Shoshone-Paiute Duck Valley Reservation in Nevada in 1979.\n\nHe then turned to writing, music, and acting, with roles in movies including 1992's \"Thunderheart\".\n\nThe documentary \"Trudell\" about his life was made over a decade-long period and premiered at the 2005 Sundance Music Festival.\n\nhttps://www.johntrudell.com/",
