From 1968 to 1975, he was the music director, arranger, trombonist, and a primary composer for James Brown’s band, The J.B.'s. Wesley’s influence helped shift the band’s sound from soul to funk, a style that would soon dominate R&B music. \n\nFred Wesley’s journey didn’t stop there – he also collaborated with George Clinton’s Parliament-Funkadelic and played in Bootsy Collins’ Bootsy’s RubbeR&Band.
